Artist Statement
Art for me is about making connections and communicating a strong message. Studying art for the past 2 years has made me feel like part of a community where my passion, ideas and interests are always met and encouraged. My knowledge and skills help me to have an open mindset surrounding any topic or idea I am presented with. This has provided me with a great deal of confidence artistically, academically and in my everyday life. Having the skill set to express myself, my ideas and opinions visually has and will always be the most effective way for me to make my voice heard.
I have always had an interest in other people and how we communicate with one another. Weather thats verbally, visually or physically i find trying to understand others and myself on deeper level very interesting. I am motivated by human behaviour, how we respond to different situations and how we connect with others. I am inspired by the work of artists like Jenny Holzer, Gillan Wearing and Barbara Kruger. Female artist who explore the relationship between the art and the environment it exists within as well as how it is viewed and interacted with by people. Questioning the audience with how they feel and respond to the work. As well as this i have been to galleries in London exhibiting John Bellany and Allan Davie paintings. I loved this exhibition and how these artists communicate real characters, place and how each of the elements interact with one another to tell a story and ask questions. I want to implement this in my work and have people not only questioning the work but themselves. I also take inspiration from a lot of feminist literature as well as documentary’s about different cultures and how we interact with one another.
